Re "History is a view or edit mode?": It's hard to say... I'd put it between the two, somewhat closer to view. It is mainly used for information purposes (i.e. to see who changed what), but it does allow to make changes.
Re "In the edit mode how can I access the viewer options? the menu and shortcuts are gone": I don't think the viewer options are necessary in edit mode. As Raluca said: the user should first finish what he's doing (editing) and then go to the viewer options.
Re "Class is a page edit mode or is more general?": That's a good point... Right now, a class is a document, and can be edited as any other document. But as soon as the Document Type Manager is done, classes can (and should) be handled at a different level.
If you mean to replace the "Choose editor" panel by a menu similar to the view mode menu, but adapted to the edit mode (offering various editors, among other things), I think it's an excellent idea.
"Is print preview a view mode?"
Yes.
"History is a view or edit mode?"
Is edit, since you can modify it, if you have the proper rights.
"In the edit mode how can I access the viewer options? the menu and shortcuts are gone (Silvia)"
The solutions are:
2. Save & View

We should try to experiment a little with some proposals with:
- edit without Choose Editor panel
- edit with a custom action menu
